Aim

Gain the knowledge and practical skills required for dealing with an unresponsive casualty, with the use of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Also develop an understanding of the causes, signs, symptoms and treatments of anaphylaxis.

Objectives

  • Discuss chain of survival, and how to initially recognise and assess someone that is experiencing cardiac arrest
  • Outline signs and symptoms of chest pain, choking and the unconscious patient
  • Discuss the recovery position and how to place the patient in the recovery position
  • Demonstrate how to initiate compressions and safe defibrillation using an AED
  • Outline the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Recognise moderate and severe reactions
  • Describe what an EpiPen is and what it does
  • Demonstrate how to use an EpiPen on someone who is experiencing anaphylaxis

Qualification

Attendees are awarded with a certificate upon successful completion. This qualification is valid for 1 year, and must be undertaken again in order to maintain the qualification.

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Recognise signs of cardiac arrest and demonstrate initial assessment and management of that casualty
  • Explain why early intervention and the performance of resuscitation is important
  • Outline how to deal with a choking or unresponsive casualty, and how to manage a casualty with chest pain
  • Demonstrate how to place a casualty in the recovery position correctly and identify any risks or complications when placing someone in the recovery position
  • Demonstrate how to turn on the AED, attach the pads correctly and follow the AED prompts
  • Outline what anaphylaxis is and how to manage it
  • Identify the differences between a moderate reaction and a severe reaction
  • Identify key features of adrenaline-auto injectors, and how to safely use it
